The territory of
Livigno is situated in the heart of Retiche Alps. It is composed of a big
complex of valleys which extends around the main valley where the Spöl
river flows and where you can find the main center of habitations. The two
main geographical features are the altitude and the "plateau"
structure. The big crest which surrounds the built-up area is constantly
at a height of more than 2,200m
A small outlying ward of Livigno, called Trepalle, lies at a height of 2,100m. and it is the highest village in Europe. Beside the main valley there are a lot of side-valleys: Federia valley, the valley of "The Mine", the Alpisella valley (where the river Adda springs), the valley of Gallo (now submurged by an artificial lake). These valleys are very rich in streams (called "rin") which originate from glaciers and are short and steep. The "BAIT" of Livigno
Most houses in Livigno keep their ancient and characteristic structure. They are called "bait" and they are made of wood and stone. Originally houses were made entirely of wood and they had got a part which was intended for the family and a part which was intended for animals. They were not very big, they generally had a bedroom, a kitchen, a cellar to keep dairy products fresh and a "cort" where the people kept tools and wood supply. Next to the house there was a stall and above it a barn which you could reach by a long staircase, "pont", a characteristic of Livigno which doesnt exist in the near villages. Later, when people knew other building techniques houses were build using wood, stone and cement as far as the part for the people was concerned, whereas the stall and the barn maintained the original architecture structure. Nowadays houses are as similar as possible to old ones and they are in perfect harmony with the natural surroundings.
